Erie Traditions: Stag n' Drag April 8, 2008

Filed under: Every Day Wedding — admin @ 5:25 am

“I’m going to Beth’s Stag and Drag this weekend,” says a bridesmaid to her sister who lives in Virginia. Her sister responds curiously,”You’re going to a what?”

“A Stag!”

captnbabyIf you are from Western Pennsylvania, you have probably attended a handful of Stags.  While a popular tradition with locals, many people from outside the region are not familiar with Stags.  Stags are a pre-wedding party held for brides and grooms to raise money for their wedding.  Some regions call these parties Stag n’ Doe or Buck n’ Doe parties.

The events are usually open to friends, family, and friends of friends.   To raise money, guests are asked to pay a nominal fee (typically $5) for beer and food.  During the event, members of the wedding party sell raffle tickets, 50/50’s, scratch offs, and shots.  Card games and sports are also popular events during Stags.  Stags are usually held a couple of months or a few weeks before the wedding.

The picture on the left is from a Stag I attended last summer.  The woman holding the baby was walking around to all the tables to raffle off the bottle of Captain Morgan (not the baby or the keys, hehe).  Here are some tips to help plan games for your stag.

Welcome to the Erie Wedding Season April 7, 2008

Filed under: Every Day Wedding — admin @ 5:03 am

April_2008 069It’s beginning to look a lot like Spring in Erie.  The little birdies are starting to chirp, the sun is starting to sneak through the clouds, and the weekends are filling up with invitations to showers, weddings, and stag and drags. Welcome to wedding season!

Wedding season officially kicked off for me this weekend as I attended a bridal shower for a friend at Alto Cucina at 3531 West Lake Road (formerly the Aviation Club and Randazzo’s).  Next weekend, I will attend a wedding at the East Erie Moose Club on Iroquois Avenue in Harborcreek.

I took plenty of pictures at the Bridal Shower that you are welcome to browse through on Flickr

How many wedding events will you attend this year?  Let’s hear about it in the comments section!

New Site Design for Bridal Elegance April 3, 2008

Filed under: Every Day Wedding — admin @ 4:38 pm

I recently wrote a critical review on Bridal Elegance but I’ll still give them a chance.  Bridal Elegance, located by the Millcreek Mall near Pier One, has newly designed, in-progress website that’s worth checking out: http://www.bridalelegance-eriepa.com/.  There were no apparent dead links which is refreshing for an Erie wedding website.  So many of the wedding businesses that have websites let them get out dated.  Getting a wedding website is one thing– keeping it updated will build loyalty and gain traffic.

I would also like to mention the wedding blog of local wedding photographer, Heather Neckers .  If you want to see a nice portfolio, visit her site for great wedding picture examples.

Photo Tour: Bayfront Convention Center March 31, 2008

View from Inside the Bayfront Convention CenterIf you are considering holding an event at the Bayfront Convention Center located in Downtown Erie, now is your chance to see pictures from the comfort of your computer chair.  I recently visited the Bayfront Convention Center and took many pictures.  See the Flickr Slide Show now

The Bayfront Convention Center opened in August 2007.  Since August, they have worked to improve the venue.    I have it on good authority that the stop light off of the Bayfront Parkway will be working in April making it easier to enter and leave.  The Sheridan should be opening within the next two months, offering near bye hotel accomodations.

If you have had an event at the Bayfront Convention Center, please share your stories, pictures, and reviews with us!

New Erie Wedding Choices March 30, 2008

capers.gifHave you heard about Capers yet?  Capers is a much needed charming little restaurant and reception hall on Erie’s East side.  Located just off the Bayfront Connector and East 38th Street near Bird Drive, Capers offers tasty treats with contemporary style.  The masterminds behind Caper’s have really focused on little details that make the hall a great back drop for weddings and events for up to 200 people.  (Finally, a location that is beautiful, not ugly!)  From beautiful chandeliers, curvy forks that harmonize with wavy chairs, even the restroom tiles are beautiful.

Capers offers off-site catering and has a restaurant that is open Tuesday-Friday for lunch.  I urge you to check this business out because it deserves to be noticed.  If you have been to Capers, please share your experiences here.

Wedding Themed Games

Filed under: Every Day Wedding — admin @ 10:15 am

perspectiveIt’s safe to say that planning the perfect Erie wedding can be hard work and even stressful.   Being in Erie means couples have unique challenges, planning around weather than can drastically change within five minutes and trying to find unique spaces to make your wedding special.  Spring wedding season is just around the corner meaning that it’s crunch time for many couples who still need to tie off loose ends.  Need a break yet?

Temporarily distract yourself and play wedding themed games from Yahoo Games.  Games include Wedding Dash, Dream Day Wedding, Dream Day Honeymoon, Diamond Detective, and Dream Day First Home.

Erie Wedding Invitations March 29, 2008

Filed under: Every Day Wedding — admin @ 5:42 pm

chan.jpgAn important part of wedding planning is deciding on where to buy your wedding invitations.  If you are budget concious, you may choose to print your own wedding invitaitons, save the dates, and announcements.  Wedding invition kits are available in many stores including Target, Walmart, many craft stores, and on the Internet.  (My favorite website for printing cheap, high quality save the dates.)  If you have budgeted an appropriate amount, you can visit many Erie area businesses to find the perfect invitations to compliment your wedding.

The following list are vendors who offer wedding invitations in their stores:

A La Carte - A store nestled in the Colony Plaza on Erie’s west side that offers unique gifts from around the area and beyond. If you are looking for gifts for your bridesmaid’s, don’t forget to check here. Review

Photoshop Express: Edit your wedding pictures

Filed under: Every Day Wedding — admin @ 5:21 pm

Do you have rights to your wedding photos and want to jazz them up?  If you are seeking software to digitally edit your wedding or engagement photographs, a lightened version of Photoshop is available to manipulate your photographs.  Turn your pictures into memories that will last forever.  This geeky bride loves to play with images in photoshop!  It can be fun for you, too!

Photoshop has officially launched a light version of Photoshop on their website called Photoshop Express.  While users will not be able to create and edit layers like the full version, they will be able to “crop, resize, tweak, and twirl.”

Photoshop has incorporated social networking models into Photoshop Express.  When users sign up, they get their own URL to share photo slide shows with their friends.  You can showcase your creative pictures to your friends and family.  The slide shows are high quality with impressive transitions.  Photos from Facebook, Picasa, and Photobucket can be imported into the tool.  It’s great when tools can work together to make your wedding experience last forever.

Just Engaged Tip #1: Reduce Bridal Junk Mail March 24, 2008

Filed under: Every Day Wedding — admin @ 10:32 am

If you are newly engaged, the first thing you should do is create an email address just for wedding planning purposes.  Setting up a separate account, will help protect you from digital bridal junk mail.  When you are registering for bridal websites, bridal shows, or anything wedding related, many hosts will sell your name to others in the wedding industry. Before you know it, your inbox will be cluttered with messages from hotels, venues, photographers, and more.   If you are worried about not receiving messages because you are using a secondary account, you can temporarily forward emails from your wedding account to your personal account.

I learned this tip the hard way after I used my personal email address to register for a bridal show.  Before I knew it, I was getting 15 emails a day from vendors trying to get new customers.

A Tough Review: Bridal Elegance February 17, 2008

Filed under: Real Erie Weddings & Reviews — admin @ 4:22 pm

NYE Inspiration

The number of Erie bridal boutiques can be counted on one hand.  I wish that there was one gem that stood out as being an outstanding boutique.  So far, I have not found it.

Over the weekend, I stopped by Bridal Elegance.  They were having an Alfred Angelo trunk sale.  The staff was super busy.  I have never been greeted when I have been to Bridal Elegance.  I always have to ask for help, if I can find someone to ask, and the staff is never friendly.  In fact, the staff at the store is more accommodating to themselves than brides to be.

Customer Service is not Bridal Elegance strength.  The experience of the customer is obviously not their priority.  They have little rules that they like to stick to.  One such rule is the “no photography rule.”  There is a sign in the dressing rooms that say pictures must be approved by bridal consultants.  My consultant said that I could not take a picture of the dress I am considering (unless I was going to buy it!).  I am not going to buy a dress unless I can see what it looks like in a picture.  It’s just not going to happen.  They said a consultant must help me.  I could not try on gowns without their assistance.  Because of this, and the continously unpleasant experiences I have had, I probably will not buy a dress from Bridal Elegance.

I have not been to LeeMar’s yet, but I hope they have better customer service than Bridal Elegance.

What are your experiences with Bridal Elegance or LeeMar’s?  Let us know!  Fair and balanced opinions mean a lot to us, so please leave your feedback!
